Stepping into the New Economy post COVID-19

The COVID19 plague has accelerated 10 key tech trends which include but is not limited to digital payments, telehealth and robotics. Technology has also been instrumental in reducing the spread of the virus while helping businesses stay open. Helping societies stay resilient in the current pandemic, technology will most likely augment any impact or threat that may happen in the future, that is if we are to learn from our mistakes.

Because of COVID-19, what started as “Nice to Have”, has now transitioned to “Must Have”. The technological trends we see are the following.

Experts weigh in on how to rehabilitate legacy mines across the Philippines

Based on MGB’s 2019 list, there are approximately 10 abandoned mines in the Philippines. These are Philex Mining Corp., Western Minolco Mining Co., Black Mountain, Inc., Benguet Exploration, Inc., Silica Sand Mines, Palawan Quicksilver Mines, Inc., Romblon Marble Mines, Benguet Consolidated, Inc., Unidos Mining Corp., and Zambales Base Metals, Inc.

Two years in, we are still on this conversation. The only difference now is that the industry is swiftly re-aligning itself with what the Philippine President seeks for his country and his countrymen – the protection of the environment and quality of life for all. 

PABC makes courtesy visit to Sydney Australia Consul-General Tago, discusses bilateral issues

The Philippines-Australia Business Council (PABC) made a courtesy call to Sydney Australia Consul-General Ezzedin H. Tago. With PABC Past Chairs Albert Garcia (2008-2012) and Antonio V. Enriquez (2013-2016), the group took the opportunity to discuss how to further create engagement and dialogue with the Consular office and the Consul-General himself on a number of bilateral issues, specifically the matter of the Social Security Agreement (SSA), which the PABC continues to champion on behalf of the Filipino community in Australia.

According to Philippine Ambassador to Australia Hellen de la Vega together with her fellow diplomats, the countries of Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea are organising a trade and tourism mission to the Philippines in year 2020. Represented by these diplomats, the Filipino communities residing in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea are keen to do business in 2020, thus are seeking for the support of the PABC and other local chambers.

The objective of this meeting was to explore possibilities on how the Municipality of Bacolod-Kalawi and the OLLI Consulting Group can collaborate, with the hopes of a synergy between the public and private sector on furthering inclusive business across Mindanao. Revisiting Australia’s ambitious trade deal with the Philippines

On August 7 2019, the Philippines Australia Business Council (PABC), with guidance from Philippine Ambassador to Australia, H.E. Ambassador Ma. Hellen B. De La Vega, requested a meeting with the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) to work towards holding an event participated in by the government and private sectors to assess the track record of usage of the ANZFTAA and to further promote its utilization by Philippine exporters and traders.

This meeting was attended by DTI Assistant Secretary, Industry Development and Trade Policy, Atty. Allan Gepty; PABC Vice Chairman, Thomas Aquino; PABC Chairman and Quisumbing Torres Partner Atty. OLLI Bambu supports university architecture project

Forget steel and concrete. The building material of choice for the 21st century might just be bamboo. On June 11, 2019, Tuesday, OLLI Bambu under flagship organization the OLLI Consulting Group, Inc., shipped out 10 Guadua bamboo seedlings to Architect Mary Ann A. Espina, Associate Professor and Architect of Record for UP College of Architecture Building, via Air cargo. Consequently, on June 14, 2019, Friday, a ceremonial planting of these seedlings was conducted at  the new parking lot near the new building of the UP College of Architecture.

Turkish economic delegation meets with Filipino business groups

On June 18 2019, the Dış Ekonomik İlişkiler Kurulu (DEIK), otherwise known as the Foreign Economic Relations Board of Turkey, made a trip to Manila to explore opportunities and business synergies between Turkey and the Philippines. Held at the CIP Building, McKinley Hill Town Center, Fort Bonifacio,Taguig, the 18-man delegation represented Turkish companies from the industries of energy, textile, media, construction, infrastructure, cosmetics, food, and tourism.

A collaborative project between Wine Depot and SEM Scribe Publishing House, SSPH Chief Content Officer Paula Tolentino says writing about wine is not as easy as it looks.

Community Safety a Priority in Rizal Quarry Group of Operators

To create a strong safety culture in medium to high risk professions such as quarrying and mining, behaviour- based transformation is necessary. On April 4 2019, the Eastern Rizal Miners Association (ERMA), together with 235 participants from different companies and 25 barangays within the province of Rizal attended an emergency awareness and preparedness seminar at the Ynares Event Center in Antipolo City, Rizal.

The conversation is just starting but the interest for this grass is growing. Bamboo can dynamically change the conversation both on a socio-economic and environmental level not only for our mines but for those affected by the mines” adds Dominguez.  

Quarrying – key component in Duterte’s Build Build Build ambition

The demand for construction aggregates may be big now, but it will get colossal in the years to come. Stone, being an essential component used in the construction of homes, factories, schools, hospitals and public infrastructure, makes Philippine quarries an important player in the nation’s economy, the Eastern Rizal Miner’s Association (ERMA) included.
